How it works

Cubic yards = (L × W × depth÷12) ÷ 27 × (1 + waste%). Tons ≈ order yards × 1.4 (typical damp, as-delivered sand). Buy quantities round up.

Worked example

Example: 20 ft × 10 ft at 2 in → ≈33.3 cu ft ≈ 1.23 cu yd ≈ 1.73 tons planning weight at 1.4 t/yd³.

Depth by use

Paver bedding sand is often about 1 inch. Sandbox fill is deeper. Ask your supplier which sand grade you need (concrete, masonry, or play sand).

Tons vs yards

Density varies with moisture. Dry sand is often ~1.20–1.35 t/yd³; damp bulk delivery is commonly ~1.40–1.55. Aurelot YardCalc uses 1.4 tons per cubic yard as the planning default—confirm with your quarry.

Compaction

Sand settles when wetted and compacted. If finished height matters, discuss compaction with your installer.

Frequently asked questions

How many tons of sand per cubic yard?

Dry sand is often about 1.2–1.35 tons; damp as-delivered sand about 1.4–1.55. Aurelot YardCalc defaults to 1.4 for planning.

How much sand under pavers?

Bedding layers are commonly around 1 inch after screeding. Measure the paved area × depth, then convert to yards.

Play sand vs concrete sand?
