Roofing Shingle Calculator

Free roofing shingle calculator—estimate squares and bundles from plan area, roof pitch (rise per 12), and waste.

How it works

Pitch factor = √(1 + (rise÷12)²). Roof area = plan area × factor. Squares = area ÷ 100 × (1 + waste%). Bundles = ceil(squares × bundles per square).

Worked example

Example: 2,000 sq ft plan area, 6/12 pitch (rise 6), 10% waste, 3 bundles/square → factor ≈1.118 → about 24.6 squares and 74 bundles.

What is a square?

One roofing square = 100 sq ft of roof surface. Suppliers price many shingles by the square or by the bundle.

Roof pitch (rise per 12)

Enter the rise in inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run (a 6/12 roof → enter 6). The calculator converts that to the industry surface-area factor √(1+(rise/12)²). Enter 0 if your area is already the sloped roof surface.

Bundles per square

Three bundles per square is common for architectural shingles, but always check the wrapper.

Frequently asked questions

How many shingle bundles do I need?

Convert roof area to squares with pitch and waste, then multiply by bundles per square. This calculator performs those steps.

What pitch rise should I enter?

Use the first number of your pitch ratio: 4 for 4/12, 6 for 6/12, 8 for 8/12. Have a roofer measure complex or multi-pitch roofs—do not guess.

Does this include underlayment?

No—only shingle squares/bundles. Underlayment and ridge cap are separate takeoffs.
