How it works

Tiles = (area in sq in × (1 + waste%)) ÷ ((tile width + grout) × (tile height + grout)). We ceil to whole tiles.

Worked example

Example: 100 sq ft floor, 12×12 in tiles, 10% waste → about 110 tiles to buy.

Waste percentages

Straight layouts often use 5–10% waste. Diagonal, herringbone, or lots of cuts need 10–15%. Buy from the same dye lot so colors match.

Measuring the area

Multiply room length × width for floors. For walls, measure each wall and subtract windows or tub openings if they will not be tiled.

Grout and spacers

Tile count assumes the face size you enter. Grout joint width does not change piece count much for this estimate, but it does affect thinset and grout volume.

Frequently asked questions

How many 12×12 tiles per square foot?

One 12×12 tile covers 1 sq ft before waste. Always add waste for cuts and breakage.

What waste percent should I use?

Use about 10% for simple rooms. Complex patterns or many niches may need 15%.

Does this include thinset and grout?

No—this tool counts tiles only. Check bag coverage charts for thinset and grout after you know the tile area.
