How it works
Panels = ceil(length ÷ panel width). Posts = panels + 1 (ends and joints).
Worked example
Example: 96 ft run with 8 ft panels → 12 panels and 13 posts.
Panel widths
Prefabricated panels are often 6 or 8 feet wide. Measure your actual product. Gates replace one or more panel widths in the run.
Posts and corners
This estimate uses one post per panel joint plus ends. Corner, gate, and end posts may be heavier hardware—count extras for corners and gate openings.
Slopes and steps
On slopes, racked or stepped panels can change effective width. Walk the line and adjust panel count after layout.
Frequently asked questions
How many fence posts do I need?
For equal panels in a straight run, posts ≈ panels + 1. Add posts for corners and gate posts as needed.
Does this include concrete for post holes?
No. Post-hole concrete is separate—check bag yield charts based on hole diameter and depth.
What about gates?
Subtract gate opening width from the fenced length, then recalculate panels. Add dedicated gate posts.
