How it works
Pavers = (area in sq in × (1 + waste%)) ÷ ((paver width + joint) × (paver height + joint)). We ceil to whole pieces.
Worked example
Example: 200 sq ft patio, 12×12 in pavers, 1/8 in joints, 10% waste → count rises vs zero-joint math.
Waste percentages
Straight layouts often need 5–10% waste. Curves, circles, or herringbone patterns may need 10–15%.
Joint width
Enter the sand/joint gap between pavers (often ~1/8 in). Set joint to 0 only if your pieces are butted tight.
Base materials
Pavers sit on gravel and sand. Use the gravel and sand calculators for the base layers after you know the footprint.
Frequently asked questions
How many 12×12 pavers per square foot?
Without joints, one 12×12 paver covers 1 sq ft. Joints reduce coverage, so we divide by the module size including the gap.
What waste percent should I use?
About 10% for rectangles. Complex edges may need 15%.
Does this include edge restraint?
No—this counts paver pieces only. Edge restraints and polymeric sand are separate.
