Brick Calculator

Free brick calculator—estimate bricks from wall area, brick face size, mortar joint, and waste.

1440Bricks to buy

  • 1440Exact bricks
  • 6.86Bricks per sq ft

How it works

Bricks/ft² = 144 ÷ ((length + joint) × (height + joint)). Total = area × bricks/ft² × (1 + waste%). We ceil to whole bricks (Brick Industry Association wall-area method).

Worked example

Example: 100 sq ft wall, 7.625×2.25 in brick, 0.375 in joint, 5% waste → about 6.86 bricks/ft² and ~721 bricks to buy.

Actual size + mortar joint

Enter the brick’s specified/actual face size (for modular brick often 7⅝ × 2¼ in) and the mortar joint (typically ⅜ in). The calculator adds joint to each dimension before dividing into the wall.

Waste

Straight walls often use ~5% waste. Arches, openings, and cuts push higher (10%+).

Openings

Subtract door and window areas from the wall area before running the calculator for a tighter count.

Frequently asked questions

How many bricks per square foot?

Modular brick with ⅜ in joints is often near 6.75–6.86 bricks/ft². This tool computes density from your sizes instead of a fixed rule of thumb.

Does this include mortar?

Joint thickness is included in the brick count (so you do not over-order units). Mortar bag volume is still a separate takeoff.

Single or double wythe?

This estimate is for one face layer. Double-wythe walls need roughly twice the face brick unless you use backup units.
