How it works

Volume (cu ft) = length × width × (depth ÷ 12). Divide by 27 for cubic yards, multiply by (1 + waste%), then round up.

Worked example

Example: 20 ft × 10 ft bed at 6 in → 100 cu ft ≈ 3.7 cu yd, so buy 4 cubic yards.

Typical topsoil depth

New lawns often need 4–6 inches of quality topsoil. Garden beds may use 6–12 inches depending on existing soil. Screened topsoil packs differently than fill dirt.

Bags vs bulk

Bulk delivery by the cubic yard is usually cheaper for anything over a few bags. Confirm whether your quote is loose or compacted volume.

Uneven grades

If the yard slopes, take an average depth or split the area into zones. Order a little extra for settling after watering.

Frequently asked questions

How much topsoil for a new lawn?

Many installs use about 4–6 inches over the prepared grade. Measure length × width × depth, then convert to cubic yards with this calculator.

Is topsoil the same as fill dirt?

No. Topsoil is richer growing medium; fill dirt is cheaper structural fill. Use the right product for planting beds.

Should I order extra?

Yes—settling and uneven spots eat volume. Rounding up a yard is common for medium beds.
